How can I stop theft of my eBook?

eBook theft

No eBook author wants to see others using their work without permission whether for commercial gain or other wise. But preventing theft of eBooks can be a challenge for eBook authors.

A few key things that can help prevent theft of your eBook are:

  • Use of anti theft software (see beneath for more information)
  • Careful consideration of where you store your eBook files (if on a website in a protected area or elsewhere)
  • Inclusion of explicit copyright statements and terms of use for your eBooks(s)

eBook encryption

eBook encryption involves information being converted into an algorithm so that it becomes unreadable unless the reader has the ability (software) to decrypt back into plain text which can be read by humans.

OpenPGP is a popular standard for encryption/decryption but, like other standards, this only controls who can open your eBook and not what can be done with it once decrypted. Digital rights management must then be used controls what happens after users can open your eBook.

eBook encryption software

There are a number of different pieces of software for helping eBook authors encrypt their work. Such software generally protects eBook information / data whilst in various states of transfer from one place to another.

Many eBook encryption solution providers offer services that work across different platforms and devices.
